About YOU
NYC post-punk outfit YOU. may have a heart that beats for Detroit, the hometown of both vocalist Trever Millay and synth/drum programmer Brad Taormina, but the soul of their music stretches far beyond the Midwest. YOU.’s music has always pitted its more reflective elements against the austerity of electronics, not so much as to create a warm sound as to invite the listener in as respite from the cold. This sound is captured well in their first two albums, but when YOU. joined forces with Dais Records in 2014 for their third record, Sunchaser, YOU. refined their initial qualities almost to the point of reinvention. With a new expanded lineup featuring guitarist Scott Kiernan and bassist Lee Lichtsinn, Sunchaser makes stone walls collapse by pushing simple and effective melodies that beam with hope in the face of adversity. Yet the album retains a distant and reserved presence with its soft and discreet rendering. Sunchaser was recorded by Sean Ragon (Cult of Youth) at Heaven Street, and his previous work with YOU. informed the care he put into the production. The result is an album that depicts the sound of systems working thanklessly in the dead of the night.
